Bike to Work Month 2009 - Part I

I got a roster of 9, possibly 10 people for Bike to Work Month. Team members threw out names and voted on them. We are "The Handlebarbarians". Marpac Construction challanged us in the contest. I think our teams are fairly well matched as long as banquet business is up in May.

Spring is in the air. The temperatures are warmer, my allergies are back, Brants are migrating back up through Seattle, seedlings are poking up through the soil, Sirius hangs low in the evening, and all the weekend, sunny day cyclists are back on the trails and streets.

I've been trying to get work to participate in the new 2009 cycling commute credit. This new law basically provides $20 a month to all employees who commute to work by bicycle at least 60% of the time and don't participate in other commuter benefits like monthly bus passes or free parking. The $20 is meant to pay for bicycle maintenance. It's something that I would actually use for bicycle maintenance. The company I work for is hung up on how could employees prove that they actually cycle to work at least 60% of the time. It's sad beause this would a be a perfect place to enact such a program.

Bike to work month is almost here again (May) and so is Group Health's Annual Commuter Challenge. I have managed to gather up 9 people at work for our team with very little effort.
